Marcus Rashford scored two and Phil Foden added another as England easily overcame Wales 3-0 on Tuesday to advance to the knockout stages of the 2022 World Cup. Gareth Southgate’s team dominated the first half but couldn’t convert it into points until Rashford’s stunning free kick minutes into the second half and a Foden tap-in seconds later. Senegal, who finished second in Group A, will face the Three Lions on December 4. Wales, on the other hand, was ousted from the competition after three games and only one point. Rashford scored England’s third goal on 68 minutes with a crisp drive that flew through Wales goalkeeper Danny Ward’s legs, giving England a commanding win over their regional rivals.

Jordan Henderson and Marcus Rashford were also added to the starting eleven, with Foden and Kyle Walker making their tournament debuts. Southgate made four changes from the team that played the United States to a scoreless draw. Wales manager Robert Page kept Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsay, whose positions appeared to be in jeopardy after poor performances against Iran. Only Joe Allen, Daniel James, and Ward were substituted for Wayne Hennessey, who was suspended and replaced by Ward.

Southgate’s team upped the tempo in the second half, and they looked more dangerous in attack. On minute 49, Foden was given a free kick for charging the defence, and Rashford took advantage by blasting a shot into the far right corner. After England recovered the ball back high up, Foden doubled the lead in a matter of seconds. The ball was easily tapped in by Foden after Harry Kane fired a low cross to the back post. Kieffer Moore had Wales’ best chance of the game in the 55th minute, with a speculative effort from distance that deflected off opponent defender Harry Maguire and required goalkeeper Jordan Pickford to make an outstretched save.

Rashford scored his third goal in the 68th minute, finding an opening in the opposing penalty area and blasting past goalkeeper Ward’s legs. England had more scoring chances in the latter stages. Late in the game, substitute forward Callum Wilson attempted another goal but his shot was saved. Meanwhile, defender John Stones had a great chance to score when the ball fell at his feet in the six-yard box, but he shot over the crossbar.
