In the other draws, Manchester City face Atletico Madrid, while Liverpool and Bayern Munich get Benfica and Villarreal respectively.
The draw for the Champions League quarterfinals is made and it has thrown up plenty of interesting battles. None more than defending champions Chelsea being drawn up against 13-time champions Real Madrid. It will be a mouth-watering clash and a repeat of last season’s semifinal when the Blues outsmarted Los Blancos 3-1 on aggregate to reach the final, which they won by beating Manchester City 1-0. Both the English sides could face each other once again in the semifinals if they win their respective last eight clashes. Pep Guardiola’s side also have a tough assignment in the quarterfinals when they take on defending La Liga champions Atletico Madrid.
Atletico had beaten Manchester United 2-1 on aggregate in the previous round. After the first leg ended 1-1, Diego Simone’s side overcame the Red Devils 1-0 at Old Trafford to win the round-of-16 tie on Tuesday. It will be interesting to see how Guardiola’s possession-based dominant City side fare up against a defensive force in Simeone’s team. This side of the Champions League quarterfinal draw is much more difficult than the other side.

Defending Europa League winners Villarreal were drawn against German champions Bayern Munich. The Spanish side produced an upset win over Italian giants Juventus in the last 16 clash. In the other match, in-form Premier League side Liverpool will take on Benfica. Bayern and Liverpool are in red-hot form and are expected to win their respective matches. If that happens, fans could be in for a treat in the semifinals, with Bayern facing off against Liverpool.
In the first week of April, the quarter-finals will take place. Liverpool and Manchester City’s respective first-leg clashes will be held on April 5, while the return legs will take place on April 13. On the other hand, Chelsea and Bayern Munich’s matches are scheduled for April 6 and the return legs will be played on April 12. Meanwhile, the semi-finals will take place on April 26 and April 27, with the second legs scheduled on May 3 and 4.
