The wait seems to be finally over for Manchester United fans as the Old Trafford outfit have agreed to a staggering 73 million pounds deal to sign Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund, the German club have confirmed. Later, Manchester United also confirmed an agreement in principle to sign the Dortmund winger. The Sancho-saga started last summer when United were reportedly keen to sign the young English winger, but for various reasons, the transfer did not materialise. The entire saga re-appeared once the recent Premier League and Bundesliga seasons got over. With Sancho heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent weeks, the deal could finally be nearing completion.

“Manchester United is delighted to announce it has reached agreement in principle with Borussia Dortmund for the transfer of Jadon Sancho,” the Premier League club said in a statement. “The signing is subject to contractual terms and a medical, which will be completed after Jadon’s involvement in the UEFA European Championship.”

On Thursday morning, the German side made a stock exchange announcement, which confirmed Sancho has agreed personal terms with Manchester United, with the transfer set be finalised subject to a medical. “The player Jadon Sancho is about to move from Borussia Dortmund GmbH & Co. KGaA to Manchester United Football Club Limited,” the announcement said.

“Both clubs and the player reached an agreement on this today. If the transfer is realised, Manchester United will pay BVB a fixed transfer fee of EUR 85.0 million. The contractual details now have to be coordinated and documented. The formal processing of the transfer is also subject to the successful completion of all necessary medical tests and examinations, a coordination procedure with the player’s previous club and the proper and timely processing in accordance with the provisions of the FIFA Transfer Matching System.”

Borussia Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke confirmed the agreement during a press conference to unveil new head coach Marco Rose. Watzke said, “We reached a general agreement with Manchester United on the transfer of Jadon Sancho, pending full completion, as there are still some formalities to agree on and the medical check to be completed.”

Sancho’s contract at Dortmund runs until the summer of 2023. A transfer in this window makes sense for the Bundesliga club as they do not want to risk him entering the final year of his deal. If they try to sell him next summer, the German side might not be able to get such a huge transfer fee. Meanwhile, Dortmund are reportedly looking at PSV’s Donyell Malen and Noni Madueke as possible replacements since both the players have been extensively scouted.

Manchester City, Sancho’s former club, reportedly retain a sell-on clause and stands to profit nicely if the deal goes through. After coming through Watford’s academy before joining City in 2015, Sancho joined the German club in 2017 after declining a new contract at the Etihad. It did not take long for the English winger to become a vital part of the team. He has scored 50 goals in 137 appearances for the Bundesliga side.
