Blackburn Rovers will host Leicester City in an EFL Championship fixture at Ewood Park on Sunday afternoon. Both sides were involved in EFL Cup third round ties in the mid-week, with the hosts securing a comprehensive 5-2 win over Cardiff, while the Foxes were beaten 3-1 by Liverpool. The visitors are currently occupying second spot in the English second tier standings, having collected 21 points from eight games, just a solitary point adrift of surprise leaders Ipswich Town, who were held to a 1-1 draw by Huddersfield Town at the weekend. The Riversiders, meanwhile, are languishing at the 17th position, with ten points to their name from eight league-matches so far.

Blackburn have had a mixed start to the 2023-24 campaign, recording six wins, four defeats and one draw from 11 games across all competitions so far. The Riversiders went into their EFL Cup third round tie against Cardiff on the back of one win and three defeats from four league outings, but Jon Dahl Tomasson’s men prevailed 5-2 thanks to Andrew Moran’s brace and one goal each from Jake Garrett, Arnor Sigurdsson and Dilan Markanday. Astonishingly, Blue and Whites have now scored 17 goals in just three EFL Cup ties this season, setting up a trip to Chelsea in the last 16. Meanwhile, when it comes to the Championship, the Rovers have won just three of their eight league games, and their latest second tier success came against Middlesbrough (2-1) mid-way through this month thanks to Sammie Szmodics’ brace.
Leicester, on the other hand, haven’t been at their fluent best, but have managed to get the results in the second tier, recording seven wins and a defeat from their eight league-games so far. Their lone defeat came against Hull City at the start of this month, but Enzo Marseca’s men responded with three successive wins against the likes of Southampton (4-1), Norwich City (2-0) and Bristol City (1-0). Meanwhile, a much changed side pushed Liverpool at Anfield in the EFL Cup last time out, taking an early lead through Kasey MCateer’s third-minute opener, but the Reds scored three goals in the second-half to go through to the last 16. Nevertheless, Maresca’s men shift their focus to the Championship, where they have a chance to move to the summit of standings, as leaders Ipswich dropped points against Huddersfield on Saturday.
