Aston Villa and Brentford will meet in Maryland for their final fixture of the Premier League Summer Series.
The Premier League Summer Series returns to the fold with another set of matches this weekend as Brentford lock horns with Unai Emery’s Aston Villa side in an interesting match at the FedExField on Sunday. The Lions can become the winners of the inaugural edition of the Premier League Summer Series if they manage to beat the Bees. While the Bees have been beaten twice since travelling to the United States, Villa has scored five goals in two games and remains undefeated. After over an hour of delay due to thunderstorms, the Villans’ new club-record signing Moussa Diaby scored on his first appearance in a claret and blue shirt. The West Midlands side had already followed their pre-season opener at Walsall – which ended 1-1 at Bescot Stadium. They also drew against Premier League rivals Newcastle United in Pennsylvania, as they warm up for the 2023-24 campaign.
By contrast with Sunday’s opponents, Brentford fell to another defeat in their second Summer Series game on Wednesday against Brighton. The Bees went behind midway through the first half in Atalanta, then saw their deficit doubled in the 58th minute. However, Thomas Frank’s side were unable to work their way back into the game. Having started the Premier League’s Stateside tournament with a 3-2 loss to Fulham last week, Brentford are still searching for a first pre-season victory. Concluding the 2022-23 campaign in style, Frank’s men had finished with a flourish in May. They defeated West Ham United, Manchester City and Tottenham in their final three fixtures. Since promotion to the top flight, Brentford has already progressed rapidly. Hence, it will be interesting to see what the Bees have up their sleeves against Unai Emery’s side.
