Why McLaren's improvement in 2022 was hampered by 18-inch F1 tyres

The Woking team struggled more than competitors to adjust to the new Pirelli Formula 1 tyres that were adopted for the 2022 season, according to Andrea Stella, the new team principal of McLaren.

Even though they were frequently forgotten about during the season as attention was diverted to porpoising and the aerodynamic effects of the new rules, the changeover to 18-inch tyres was a significant component of this year’s updated technical package. Stella acknowledges that the team’s inability to “mitigate” the effects of the new tyres as successfully as its competitors meant that they frequently required extra attention during race weekends. Since their debut, they have produced a relatively sharp driving behaviour for the vehicle with the powerful front tyres when travelling straight, according to Stella.

He continued, “There’s clearly a motivating factor, as Andrea has indicated, in figuring this out. Again, you might have noticed this a little bit this year as drivers hurried to get to their automobiles. There are also more elements, such as the aero load or the aero characteristics. “This car has a lot better solution to the problem we experienced last year. However, there are other problems with these cars that are entirely specific to them, and it appears that this has once more had a marginally unfavourable impact on us.
