There is a buzz among Indian racing enthusiasts, particularly Formula 1 aficionados, as the country’s ‘one in a billion talent,’ Jehan Daruvala, prepares for the 2022 F2 season. He switched to reigning champions Prema Racing, where he finished third in the drivers’ standings in the inaugural 2019 F3 Championships. Jehan, who is third in the championship with 61 points after barely missing out on a sprint race win at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Saturday, has undoubtedly become the first Indian to compete for the F2 crown as his Prema Racing car goes quicker than ever.

The last F2 season

Is he content to be the finest Indian racing driver ever in the F2 class, though, for someone as ambitious as Jehan? Certainly not, insists the Red Bull Junior driver, who is aiming for a career F1 driving seat following a scorching start to the season with three straight podiums. “In terms of Formula 2, this is most likely or definitely to be my last season. But my goal is to get to Formula 1 and I definitely have to keep on getting good results and fight for the championship and hopefully put myself out there to get a F1 seat.” said Daruvala.

The F1 seat

Getting a seat in Red Bull, on the other hand, is more difficult than it appears, especially when their F1 mentors are insistent about preserving their seats. While a berth in the Red Bull senior squad seems unlikely, with World Champion Verstappen and Sergio Perez currently under contract until at least 2023, the Juniors are more interested in the AlphaTauri spots. Helmut Marko, the team’s main figure, has already stated that Gasly and Tsunoda are likely to hold their seats in 2023. But Daruvala is not bothered with the factors that are not under his control and focuses on what can be done from his side.

‘Delivering good results is all I can do’

“Delivering good results is all I can do. The rest of it is out of my control but I need to keep pushing and keep trying and make it difficult for the rest of them. I already have achieved 11 podiums in F2 and I hope to achieve at least 20 by the end of the season. Hopefully, that proves I am constantly fighting at top positions or fighting for the title. I really hope that on merit I can make it to Formula 1 and fight with the best teams.” opined Jehan.
