Lewis Carl Davidson Hamilton (born 7 January 1985) is a British Formula One driver who currently drives for Mercedes. Hamilton has a joint world record of seven World Drivers` Championship titles (tied with Michael Schumacher), as well as the most victories (103), pole positions (103), and podium finishes (183) in Formula One. Hamilton, who was born and reared in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, joined McLaren’s young driver programme in 1998. This led to a Formula One drive with McLaren from 2007 until 2012, making Hamilton the championship’ first (and so far only) black driver on the grid. Hamilton set multiple records in his first season, finishing second to Kimi Räikkönen by one point. He won his first title the following season.

With the introduction of new regulations in 2014 mandating the use of turbo hybrid engines, Hamilton embarked on a hugely successful run in which he won six more drivers’ titles. During a tight duel with teammate Nico Rosberg, he won two consecutive championships in 2014 and 2015. Following Rosberg’s departure, Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari became Hamilton’s closest adversary in two championship clashes, in which Hamilton twice overcame midseason point deficits to win successive crowns in 2017 and 2018. In 2019 and 2020, he won his third and fourth straight titles, tying Schumacher’s record of seven driver titles.

Hamilton has been credited with increasing the global popularity of Formula 1 by attracting a wider audience outside of the sport, in part due to his classy lifestyle, active for environmental and social advocacy, as well as through his music and fashion. He also became a strong supporter of the anti-apartheid movement and promoted greater diversity in motorsport. Hamilton was named one of Time’s 100 most influential people in the world in 2020, and he was knighted in the 2021 New Year’s Honors.
