Five drivers with the most world championship wins in Formula 1 history

Formula 1 is often seen as the pinnacle of motorsport, and with good reason. Thus, there is tangible excitement in the air as F1 returns for the 2022 season.

The sport has seen 34 drivers crowned world champion. But who has won the most titles?

Lewis Hamilton holds the joint record for most number of F1 world title wins. The man he shares it with is Michael Schumacher.

Before Hamilton equalled this record in 2020, few thought it would be overhauled this quickly after Schumacher’s retirement.

But Hamilton and Mercedes have been a dominant combination since 2014; Mercedes won 7 straight titles from 2014-20, with Hamilton winning a whopping six of them.

The man who remains the GOAT of F1 for many, Schumacher became the record holder for most title wins in 2003 when he won his 6th title. He then made the record even safer by winning a seventh in dominant fashion in 2004.

Yet Schumacher’s title wins are about more than just the numbers. He put two teams on the map with his title wins; after his title wins in 1994 and 1995, Benetton became the team to join for many. And his burning desire to make Ferrari great again resulted in a run of five straight titles from 2000-04.

The original benchmark all the way up until 2003, Fangio is another whose name is forever written in the annals of F1 history. In an era where driver safety often took a back seat, the Argentine driver was an absolute daredevil.

His first world title win came in 1951 driving at Alfa Romeo, and he then won 4 straight titles from 1954-57 with three different teams – Maserati, Mercedes and Ferrari.
