Capito resigned as team president and CEO, while technical director FX Demaison also left his position, according to a statement released by the team on Monday. Williams stated that it would “in due course” announce its new team principal and technical director. It has been an enormous honour for Capito to oversee Williams Racing for the past two seasons and create the groundwork for this great team’s recovery, he said. I’m excited to follow the team as it advances toward future success. As the team “embarked on a massive restructuring process to begin the road of rebuilding Williams Racing,” Matthew Savage, chairman of Dorilton Capital, congratulated Capito for his work at Williams.

Pass the reins

As the team “embarked on a massive restructuring process to begin the road of rebuilding Williams Racing,” Matthew Savage, chairman of Dorilton Capital, congratulated Capito for his work at Williams. Since Capito assumed the position, Williams has improved from trailing the midfield to scoring a surprise first point in two years in Hungary last year, as well as a podium in the Belgian Grand Prix that was cut short by rain. Jost deferred his planned retirement in order to take on this challenge, and now he will hand over the keys for the following stage of this tiered process, stated Savage. “We also want to thank FX for his contribution and wish him the best of luck as he moves on,” the statement continued.

After Dorilton Capital purchased the team from the Williams family, former head of Volkswagen Motorsport Capito assumed leadership of Williams at the conclusion of 2020. Long-term contract

Before joining McLaren as its CEO in Formula One, Capito reached the pinnacle of his racing career when managing VW’s motorsport branch at a time when it controlled the World Rally Championship. Capito, however, resigned the position after only a few months due to a management shakeup brought about by the hiring of Zak Brown and the resignation of Ron Dennis, the organization’s longtime leader. After Claire Williams departed the squad in September 2020, Simon Roberts served as acting team principal until he returned to F1 with Williams to take over.

Following Mattia Binotto’s departure from Ferrari, Capito is the second F1 team principal to resign from his position since the 2022 season came to a close in Abu Dhabi last month. Williams improved from ninth in 2021 to last in the championship this year, but only managed to gain eight points throughout the season. Following Alex Albon’s entrance this year, who had primarily led its efforts throughout the season, it signed him to a long-term contract. It also recruited Formula 2 driver Logan Sargeant to take Nicholas Latifi’s seat in 2023.
