Mercedes driver George Russell believes that for any Formula 1 driver, nothing is ever enough until you’re crowned world champion.

Russell has spent the entirety of his F1 career helping a back-of-the-grid Williams F1 team make improvements. Indeed, the team has seen significant improvements over the past three years.

And while the British driver was happy with the way he improved along with the team, he is adamant that nothing is enough until you ascend the pinnacle of the sport.

“Obviously I want to be a winner, I want to be a World Champion, and we spent the whole time at the back of the grid,” Russell said in an interview with Crash.net.

“2020 was a stronger year but it wasn’t enough for us. 2021 was a stronger year but it was never enough.

“When I got into Q2 for the first time, we celebrated a lot. And when you do that a second and a third time that wears off, you want to get to Q3.

“When you are in Q3, we celebrated a lot and we were excited. But then you want to be in Q3 at every other event, or every event. Until you are World Champion, it’s never enough.”

George Russell grateful for Williams years

However, Russell believes that his time at the Williams team was well spent. In his opinion, getting that time to learn his trade in the back of the grid helped.

This way, he would be fully prepared to seize his opportunity in a bigger team whenever it arrived. And it finally will arrive in the 2022 season, when he becomes a full-time driver for the Mercedes F1 team.

“For me, obviously, if you were to give me a choice, would I prefer to be last or P10, I would say P10. But it’s not a linear progression.

“I’m still learning my trade and if I’m P10, I’m still not World Champion so I’m not overly fussed.

“I’m more grateful to have been able to learn my trade a bit under the radar, and being prepared as much as possible for when I do have a car that hopefully can help me achieve what I want to achieve.”

The Mercedes F1 team have revealed the launch date of their 2022 car. The 2021 constructor’s champions, who are aiming for a ninth straight team title, announced their launch date on Tuesday (January 18).

Taking to social media, the team shared a teaser. “18/2/22. Meet the Mercedes-AMG F1 W13 E Performance,” they said along with a graphic depicting the date.
