After missing out on the opportunity to participate in an FP1 session this season due to Mercedes’ rookie requirements, the Danish driver looks set to gain his first experience in the W13. Vesti will most likely have to wait until 2023 for a similar opportunity because the Brackley-based team chose to put AlphaTauri-bound Nyck de Vries in the car for FP1 in Mexico over the weekend. According to Motorsport.com, the 20-year-old is the favourite to represent Mercedes in the Abu Dhabi F1 young driver test, which will take place following the end of the 2022 season.

This is expected to be shortly before the F2 post-season test, in which Vesti will almost certainly compete. Although it is unclear who he will drive for. Vesti has raced in F2 this season for ART Grand Prix alongside highly touted Theo Pourchaire. Vesti’s performances and pace have improved after a slow start to the year. With qualifying being a particular issue in the early rounds, the young Dane made a breakthrough in Barcelona, where he finished third in the feature race.

In that race, Vesti earned his first F2 podium. Following that, he won his first F2 race in the Baku sprint race a few weeks later. Vesti has three more podiums with one weekend left in the season, including a double P2 in the previous round at Monza. He is P8 in the Drivers’ Championship, just 9 points behind P4 Jack Doohan. With Logan Sargeant only 9 points ahead in P3, the ART driver still has an outside chance of winning rookie of the year. Pourchaire, Vesti’s teammate, is almost certain to finish the F2 season as runner-up to MP Motorsports champion Felipe Drugovich.

Staying in contact with Mercedes

Vesti’s career could benefit from the conclusion of the F1 and F2 seasons in Yas Marina. In both F2 and with Mercedes. Vesti was accepted into the Mercedes programme in 2021. Earlier this year, he told FormulaNerds and other select publications that he used to email the team after each of his race weekends, regardless of the results, to impress them and land a spot in their academy.

The Danish driver has been linked with a 2023 return to PREMA, for whom he previously raced in F3 and FRECA. He would replace Jehan Daruvala alongside the already-confirmed Ollie Bearman. Dennis Hauger, PREMA’s other F2 driver, has already confirmed his departure from the team.
