Lance Stroll conducted a shakedown run and system check on the Aston Martin team’s all-new AMR22 this morning at Silverstone. The British outfit became the first F1 team to reveal a true 2022-spec car on Thursday, and it has maintained its lead over its competitors by putting its new contender out on the track first. The AMR22 was already stunning when it was unveiled yesterday at Aston Martin’s Gaydon headquarters. In broad daylight, however, it is unquestionably more striking.

“What we wanted to do was shakedown as early as possible to check all the systems and that on the car,” commented AM CTO Andy Green at yesterday’s launch. “That gives us some time between shakedown and the Barcelona test. That was the reason for shaking down on Friday, so we have time to react.”

“Hopefully we have a good shakedown and there’s nothing to react to. But because the car is absolutely brand new, with no carryover at all, and pre-season testing is really short, and the second test is so close to the first race, that it’s going to be almost impossible to react to, we thought it’s good to get a shakedown in prior to the first test. It gives ourselves a good gap between the shakedown and the first test to react to.”

The AMR22 launch

Aston Martin has kept the launch season going with the unveiling of the AMR22, their new-look 2022 challenger. The Silverstone-based team, which is entering its second season back on the Formula One grid, unveiled the AMR22 in an online launch, the car they hope will inspire their return to the top of the standings. Due to the controversial close design ties with Mercedes, Aston Martin, formerly known as Racing Point, grew into a midfield leader, but aerodynamic changes for 2021 hurt both outfits, with Aston Martin, formerly known as Racing Point, dropping into the lower reaches of the midfield, eventually finishing P7 in the Constructors’ Championship.

Importantly, rather than a model, Aston Martin revealed the entire ARM22, and the sidepod design immediately stands out. Aston Martin chose a unique design for the sidepod box inlets, as well as a massive undercut. Formula One has made significant rule changes for 2022, with the cars switching to ground effect aerodynamics to make them easier to follow and, hopefully, create more overtaking opportunities.
