Aston Martin has kept the launch season going with the unveiling of the AMR22, their new-look 2022 challenger. The Silverstone-based team, which is entering its second season back on the Formula One grid, unveiled the AMR22 in an online launch, the car they hope will inspire their return to the top of the standings. Due to the controversial close design ties with Mercedes, Aston Martin, formerly known as Racing Point, grew into a midfield leader, but aerodynamic changes for 2021 hurt both outfits, with Aston Martin, formerly known as Racing Point, dropping into the lower reaches of the midfield, eventually finishing P7 in the Constructors’ Championship.

But now it’s time to look ahead, as Aston Martin became the third team to reveal their 2022 livery and design, following Haas’ on February 4 and Red Bull’s on February 9.

Importantly, rather than a model, Aston Martin revealed the entire ARM22, and the sidepod design immediately stands out. Aston Martin chose a unique design for the sidepod box inlets, as well as a massive undercut. Formula One has made significant rule changes for 2022, with the cars switching to ground effect aerodynamics to make them easier to follow and, hopefully, create more overtaking opportunities.

These new rules also include stricter design parameters than before, in order to prevent the new cars’ goals from being defeated and to close the gap between the front and back of the grid.

‘We want to win’

Speaking at the launch, team chairman Lawrence Stroll said: “We are continuing our journey to the summit of Formula 1 and we want to win. But we know that winning isn’t easy, that’s why we have a five-year journey and a plan to keep climbing and to get to the top.”

“To win in Formula 1, everything has to be just in the right place and a lot of moving parts have come together. The sport is constantly evolving and unless you evolve with it, you’ll be left behind. We are going to do it as a team, because it takes the power of a team to be successful in Formula 1.”

Despite the changes, Aston Martin has kept its driver lineup for 2022, which includes four-time World Champion Sebastian Vettel and Lance Stroll. The AMR22 will take to the track with the other new challengers for an unofficial test at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on February 23-25. Pre-season testing kicks off in Bahrain on March 10-12 with a three-day test, followed by the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix on March 20 at the Bahrain International Circuit.
