Ferrari fans around the world have been waiting eagerly for news on the 2022 Formula 1 car. Well, those fans can now rest easy as the launch date for the upcoming season’s car has been revealed.

Taking to social media, the Scuderia announced that the launch date for the new car is February 17th. “One month to go…17.02.22. #essereFerrari,” they posted along with a graphic.

Thus, the Maranello-based team are the second to confirm their car’s launch date. So far, the only other team to have done so are the Aston Martin F1 team.

The AMR22, Aston Martin’s second official car, will be unveiled on February 10.

The reason for the excitement among fans this year is the new technical regulations. Car launches are always an exciting time for fans, as they get a first look at the season’s car.

However, the 2022 cars will be very different from the cars that have been raced in the last 5 seasons. This is because F1 is bringing in a host of new aerodynamic regulations in a bid for closer racing.

The 2022 regulations will seek to eliminate the problems of “dirty air”, thus making for closer wheel-to-wheel racing among teams. There’s also going to be a budget cap imposed, in theory levelling out the playing field.

How did Ferrari fare in the 2021 F1 season?

Ferrari haven’t won a world title since 2007, when Kimi Raikkonen won the championship. However, they have had their shares of ups and downs over the past few seasons.

With Sebastian Vettel at the helm, the Scuderia challenged for the title in 2017 and 2018 but fell short on both occasions.

2019 saw infighting between Vettel and new teammate Charles Leclerc dominate proceedings; although the team did win three races, they never mounted a serious title bid.

2020 was even worse, as the team slipped down the pecking order and struggled for even podium finishes, failing to win a single race.

As a result, Vettel departed the team and Carlos Sainz was brought in for the 2021 season. With a much-improved 2021 car, Ferrari immediately climbed back up the ladder.

They finished the season third in the constructor’s championship, taking home the “best of the rest” tag. What’s more, Sainz finished fifth in the driver’s standings, behind the Red Bull and Mercedes drivers.

Whether they can mount a title challenge in 2022 remains to be seen. But the power unit has improved from 2020 and this season offers a clean slate for all teams. A title run, thus, cannot be ruled out.
