5. Legion Commander:

Since her release in 2013, Legion has gained popularity and currently ranks second only to Windranger in terms of matches played. She can hold her own in close-quarters combat thanks to Moment of Courage and Press the Attack, which enables her to stay in the fray for much longer than she might otherwise be able to.

But when asked what their favorite aspect of a game is, every Legion player will reply in unison: “Winning a Duel and getting extra attack damage.” If you win enough Duels, a stacked Legion will take control of the game.

4. Pudge

The most popular Dota 2 character by far, by a wide margin. Over 4.2 million Dota matches saw The Butcher last month, nearly a million more than the next-most picked, giving him a pick rate of 28%, according to Dotabuff.

Pudge isn’t frequently used in professional matches, but many players try their luck with the tanky Strength hero because of his Meat Hook skill shot, one of the best in the game that requires some skill to land.

3. Windranger

Even though Windranger isn’t among the top 10 heroes of all time, Dotabuff reports that she has over the years improved her equipment and grown in popularity, making her the second-most popular hero in the past month. Similar to Pudge, Windranger has some skill shot abilities in the form of Powershot and Shackleshot. When combined with some survivability and speed in the form of Windrun, she makes for a niggling hero that many players can get used to, while masters can practically carry an entire game with her.

2. Juggernaut

One of Dota 2’s veteran heroes, Juggernaut’s popularity is still as high as it was when he was first introduced in 2011. Who doesn’t enjoy using a sword to cut down enemy heroes?

In the early game, his Q, Blade Fury, allows you to “spin-to-win,” and it is fantastic. In the late game, with the right item build, his ultimate Omnislash deals incredible damage, especially when used against a single target. A well-timed Omnislash can one-versus-five an opposing team if you are far enough ahead—the ultimate power fantasy of a Dota 2 carry player.

1. Sniper

Sniper almost always appears in a top 10 most played list, just like many other games on our list so far. He is incredibly welcoming to newer players, who can deal tonnes of damage from absurd distances with Take Aim and Headshot. His Q, Shrapnel, has a lot of charges and annoys enemy carries and supports to no end by giving vision and dealing damage.

And just when you think you’re out of there alive and well, he’ll fire off an assassination shot from his sniper rifle, sending you back to the fountain.
