Since their debut in season four’s System Override event, Evo shields have been a mainstay of Apex Legends. They even took the place of body shields as the default starting equipment from season six onward. Now, with season 18 just one day away, Respawn has made significant changes to the evolution system that could have a significant impact on how the meta is perceived.
In this week’s Resurrection patch, Respawn has added two changes to Evo Shields. The damage requirement to evolve a shield from white to blue has now been raised from 150 to 200. The spawn rates of blue and purple armor have also been lowered by 30%. The early-game competitions will be the first area where the changes will be felt immediately because the winning team will no longer always be determined by which team spots and captures the higher-level shields first. Teams will engage in even fights more frequently than in previous seasons, with fights relying on factors other than just luck of the draw when looting.

Guns like the Wingman, Nemesis Burst AR, and G7 Scout will find their place in the spotlight for the season when it comes to POI contests or early rotations due to their high damage and large base magazine sizes. As players get used to having less health in the early going, any weapon that can catch white shield enemies off guard and take them out in two or three bursts will gain more favor.
However, season 18 has also reduced the spawn rates of blue and purple weapon attachments by 20%, greatly shifting the priority for what players want to hold. This will have an impact on a team’s loadout for more than just the initial drop fight.
SMGs and shotguns typically perform admirably in these on-the-fly scramble circumstances, but to truly shine in damage potential, they need high rarity attachments like extended magazines and bolts. Season 18 will make it much more difficult for players to dominate with the quick TTK that the weapon class is known for because all SMGs now have lower headshot multipliers, faster strafe speeds, and less ammo capacity for the base R-99 and all attachments.
Player searches for non-attachment-required weapons will therefore increase. Most teams remain competitive until later stages because it takes an additional 50 damage to evolve a starting shield, so winning two consecutive fights does not automatically result in a huge health buff for the entire team.
