A popular TikTok video gave rise to the initial rumors that Blizzard intended to remove its wildly popular hero Reaper. The hero was allegedly being phased out, according to a short video that Knockknockow uploaded to the platform early on Monday, August 7. Fortunately, this was all a joke.
Reaper won’t be dropped from Overwatch 2 and will continue to play a role in the game for the foreseeable future, which is fortunate (or unfortunate, depending on your perspective). This rumor has caused a fair amount of controversy, but it all stems from a TikTok by user @knockknockow, who posted a clip in response to a rather convincingly fake forum post by Aaron Keller that claimed Reaper was being removed from Overwatch 2.
In Season Six, Invasion, Reaper would no longer be present, according to the post titled “Farewell to Reaper,” due to “development and balance considerations.” Others were duped into believing significant changes were about to occur, but some realized the information was false after checking official forums and discovering no such post.
That wouldn’t make sense, would it? Since the initial release of Overwatch, Reaper has been a fan favorite, and players have amassed quite a collection of skins for them. In a franchise that has already severely frustrated its community numerous times, removing the hero at this point would be some of the worst PR Blizzard could have.
