Esports has rapidly gained recognition as a highly competitive industry, with skilled players showcasing their talents in various games. Among the notable personalities in the Indian gaming scene, Animesh “Thug” Agarwal and Tanmay “Scout” Singh have recently shed light on the significance of luck in esports during a podcast episode titled “Figuring Out,” hosted by entrepreneur, motivational speaker, and content creator Raj Shamani. The Role of Luck in Esports: Insights from Scout and Thug.

Challenging the Notion of Skill Alone

Thug and Scout, both accomplished gamers, shared their perspectives on the role of luck in esports. Scout highlighted that while many believe that successful players owe their achievements solely to their skills, luck plays a crucial role as well. He argued that prominent players have reached their heights not only due to their skills, but also because they happened to be in the right place at the right time. He further elaborated that with enough practice, a player can become equally skilled as others in just six months, but it’s the right timing and opportunity that can turn them into a star player. “People don’t know about this. Some people think they are something different. No, that’s not the case. You are not god-gifted or special. You were just at the right spot at the right time. You can be replaced in a click,” he added, emphasizing the role of luck in the competitive gaming industry.

Unpredictable Nature of Esports Competitions

Thug shared his experience with the fierce competition in Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI), where hundreds of teams register for tournaments, but only a few make it to the grand finals. He explained that the 16 teams that qualify for the grand finals may not necessarily be the best teams, as some better teams might have been eliminated in the early stages. He further pointed out that various factors, such as device performance, network ping, and even luck, can affect a team’s performance in a tournament. Players may encounter issues like poor devices, bad network connectivity, or unforeseen disconnections that can significantly impact their chances of success.

The Influence of Luck on Team Performance

Scout provided a hypothetical scenario to illustrate how luck can make or break a team’s success. He presented three teams of different skill levels, Raj’s team being the best, his own team being average, and Thug’s team being the worst. Despite being the best team with good devices, Raj’s team encountered bad luck as they could not find a vehicle and died while trying to rotate to the play zone. On the other hand, despite being the worst team, Thug’s team got lucky and qualified. Scout explained that Thug’s team, despite being average players, became pros due to favourable circumstances, while the team that had skilled players and good devices was left behind for years due to bad luck and timing.

The Role of Timing and Opportunity

Scout drew a comparison with traditional sports, using football as an example. He explained that in sports, when teams are selected, a few individuals sit together and observe players, and those who stand out are called for tryouts. However, he questioned what would happen if a skilled player didn’t receive much attention during the selection process. He further pointed out that different selectors may have different mindsets, such as preferring defenders over attackers or vice versa. Scout emphasized that if players like Ronaldo or Messi hadn’t been picked by someone, the world wouldn’t have witnessed their greatness. He concluded by stating that he believes in luck and timing, challenging the notion that skill alone determines success in esports.

Scout and Thug’s insights shed light on the significant role of luck in esports, alongside skills. They emphasized that while skills are crucial, luck and timing can play a major role in esports.
