The popular manga series by Jun Mochizuki went on hiatus for 11 months since June 2022, leaving fans wondering when it would return. The good news is that it will return in the May issue of Square Enix’s Gangan Joker magazine on May 22.
“The Case Study of Vanitas” revolves around the story of Noé, a young vampire who goes to Paris to save his friend’s life. However, he finds himself caught in a conflict between humans and vampires. He meets Vanitas, a vampire doctor, who claims to have The Book of Vanitas, a clockwork grimoire of dubious reputation. Noé finds himself drawn to Vanitas’s quest to save vampirekind, but can he trust him?
Jun Mochizuki, known for her works like “Pandora Hearts” and “Crimson-Shell,” launched “The Case Study of Vanitas” in Gangan Joker in December 2015. Square Enix has published ten volumes of the manga so far, with the latest volume released in May 2022. Yen Press has been publishing the manga simultaneously in English since its debut.
In July 2021, the anime adaptation of “The Case Study of Vanitas” premiered, produced by BONES. The anime’s first and second parts premiered in July 2021 and January 2022, respectively. Funimation streamed the first part of the anime, and it also streamed an English dub. Both Funimation and Crunchyroll streamed the second part as it aired, and Crunchyroll also added the first part.

The hiatus of “The Case Study of Vanitas” was not unexpected, as the author had taken a break before in 2017. The reason for the hiatus is unknown, but it is speculated that it may be due to health issues or creative burnout.
