Suzume Film Surpasses Weathering With You's Earnings: Becomes 8th highest-earning anime film in Japan

Makoto Shinkai’s latest anime film “Suzume” has overtaken the lifetime earnings of his previous work, “Weathering With You,” becoming the eighth highest-earning anime film of all time in Japan. As of March 26, the movie has earned a cumulative total of 14,310,602,380 yen (about US$109 million), making it the 14th highest-earning film of all time in Japan.

Impressive Opening

The movie opened on November 11, 2022, and sold 1.33 million tickets, earning 1.88 billion yen (about US$13.49 million) in its first three days. It sold 38.7% more tickets and earned 47.4% more than Shinkai’s acclaimed film “your name.,” which earned 1,277,960,000 yen (about US$12.51 million) in its first three days. It also sold 14.8% more tickets and earned 14.4% more than “Weathering With You,” marking the strongest opening three days of Shinkai’s films.

Storyline and Characters

The movie follows the story of a young girl named Suzume Iwato, voiced by actress Nanoka Hara, who meets a young man named Sōta Munakata, voiced by Hokuto Matsumura, a member of the SixTONES idol group. Together, they embark on a journey as the “Door-Closing Master.” The film is directed and written by Makoto Shinkai, who is also credited with the original story. The characters are designed by Masayoshi Tanaka, while Kenichi Tsuchiya is the animation director. The art director is Takumi Tanji, and the movie is produced by CoMix Wave Films and Story Inc.

Global Release

The film is set to have a global release, with Crunchyroll, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Wild Bunch International, and Eurozoom planning to screen it in 199 countries and territories starting on April 12. Crunchyroll will handle North American distribution, while Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment will distribute the movie in Latin America, South America, Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East, Africa, and portions of Europe. The movie will also be released in French- and German-speaking Europe.

Music and Theme Songs

The movie features music composed by Kazuma Jinnouchi, known for his work on “Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045” and “RWBY: Ice Queendom,” alongside RADWIMPS. One of the film’s theme songs, “Suzume,” is performed by TikTok performer Toaka.
