Suzume Anime Film Sweeps Box Offices in China and South Korea

The anime film Suzume directed by Makoto Shinkai has topped the box office in China and South Korea for the second and fourth weekends, respectively, earning a cumulative total of US$80.6 million in China and US$29.7 million in South Korea. The film has become the second-highest grossing film of the year in South Korea and has sold over 2 million tickets worldwide. The movie will release worldwide except for Asia starting April 12.

Makoto Shinkai’s latest animated film, Suzume, continues to dominate box offices in Asia, grossing US$22.1 million in its second weekend in China and US$4.46 million in its fourth weekend in South Korea. The film, which opened in Japan on November 11, 2022, has been setting new records in every country it screens in.

China’s Box Office Record

In China, Suzume has become a phenomenon, ranking first in its opening and second weekends and earning a cumulative total of US$80.6 million in just 10 days. This feat is even more impressive when compared to Shinkai’s previous hit film, your name., which earned US$12.51 million in its first three days, as Suzume sold 38.7% more tickets and earned 47.4% more in its opening weekend. This makes it the highest-earning animated film in China to date, breaking the previous record held by the Japanese film, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train.

South Korea’s Box Office Reign

In South Korea, Suzume has also been breaking records, earning US$29.75 million in total and ranking first in its opening weekend. The film has become the second highest grossing film of the year to date, second only to The First Slam Dunk, which holds the top spot with US$34.27 million. Suzume has also become the highest-selling anime film of all time in South Korea, surpassing the previous record held by Your Name.

Worldwide Release

The film has already sold more than 2 million tickets outside of Japan and ranked first in every country outside of Japan on its first day of screening. It is planned to screen in 199 countries and territories, with a worldwide release planned on April 12 by Crunchyroll, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Wild Bunch International, and Eurozoom. Crunchyroll will handle distribution in North America, while Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment will handle distribution in Latin America, South America, Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East, Africa, and portions of Europe. The film will be released in French- and German-speaking Europe by Crunchyroll, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Wild Bunch International, and Eurozoom.
