Makoto Shinkai’s latest anime film, Suzume, has earned an impressive $2.15 million at the U.S. box office on its opening day. According to Sony Pictures, the film, which is being shown in 2,170 locations, including IMAX and other premium large formats, is expected to earn a total of $5 million during its opening weekend. This projection is based on the film’s performance on Friday, where it ranked at #4 on Box Office Mojo’s list.

Successful Previews and Openings Worldwide

Suzume had already generated excitement among fans when it earned $680,000 from preview screenings at 2,028 theaters on Thursday. In addition to North America, the film opened worldwide on Wednesday, March 15, 2023, except for Asia, and has already topped many countries’ box office charts. The film is currently the highest-selling Japanese anime in China and has sold more tickets in South Korea than any other Japanese film.

The film has surpassed the 14.23 billion yen lifetime Japanese box office earnings of Shinkai’s previous film, Weathering With You, and has earned a cumulative total of 14,310,602,380 yen (about US$109 million) as of March 26. As a result, Suzume has become the 14th highest-earning film of all time in Japan, as well as the eighth highest-earning anime film of all time in Japan.

A Story of Adventure and Friendship

Suzume tells the story of Suzume Iwato, voiced by actress Nanoka Hara, and her journey with Sōta Munakata, a young man voiced by Hokuto Matsumura, who is embarking on his first voice acting role. The two set out on an adventure as the “Door-Closing Master” and must overcome challenges to save the world from a mysterious threat. Shinkai’s Vision and Collaborations
