Street Fighter: Legendary acquires franchise's film and TV rights

Legendary Entertainment has acquired the film and TV rights for CAPCOM’s Street Fighter franchise.

According to entertainment news outlet The Hollywood Reported, Legendary Entertainment has acquired the film and TV rights for CAPCOM’s Street Fighter franchise. Legendary will be working with CAPCOM for all its upcoming projects.

The popular game series inspired a live-action film in 1994. The film featured famous stars, including Jean-Claude Van Damme, Raul Julia, Ming-Na Wen, Damian Chapa, Kylie Minogue, and Wes Studi. Another spinoff, dubbed Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, was produced by Hyde Park Entertainment. The film starred Kristin Kreuk in 2009.

Besides, Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist and Street Fighter: Resurrection live-action series were produced by Machinima. The production house released the first series on its YouTube channel in May 2014. Funimation licensed the series for release in North America.

History of Street Fighter

In October 2014, Funimation released the series on Blu-ray. Machinima released the second series on Verizon’s go90 streaming service in March 2016. Moreover, Street Fighter: World Warrior TV series was originally planned in 2018.

Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie adapted CAPCOM’s video game Super Street Fighter II in 1994. The film was released on DVD in December 2015 by Discotek Media and on Blu-ray disc in October 2016.

The franchise has also managed to inspire several anime and animated series. The Street Fighter 6 game will be making its way to PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam on June 2.

The game will see its major cast members return, including Ryu, Chun-li, and Luke, the last playable DLC character for Street Fighter V. A character called Jamie, a breakdancing kickboxer, will be joining the cast. The launch roster includes characters Kimberly, Marisa, Lily, JP, Juri, Dee Jay, Cammy, E. Honda, Blanka, Guile, Ken, Zangief, and Dhalsim.

Street Fighter V came out in February 2016 in North America and Europe for PS4 and PC via Steam.

Crunchyroll brings Street Fighter Duel

Previously, Crunchyroll Games announced the launch of a new game dubbed Street Fighter: Duel RPG for iOS and Android smartphones. The game has been launched in association with CAPCOM. Users living in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and a few countries in Europe will be able to play the new game.

Crunchyroll Games also released a gameplay trailer. The RPG game comes with more than 40 characters, including Ryu, Akuma, Chun-Li, and Cammy. Players can build a team of three and engage in real-time combat. The game also offers online play and unlockable character skins.

TOPJOY, Tencent Games, and CAPCOM originally launched the mobile game in China in November 2020. CAPCOM’s Street Fighter 6 game will launch on June 2 for PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.

Street Fighter V is the latest entry in the franchise. The game contains new features such as V-Reversal moves and a special V-Trigger mode. The game was first launched in 2016 in Europe and North America for PS4 and PC via Steam.
