The time for the Straw Hat pirates to arrive is getting shorter, and so is the time for the search for the famed One Piece treasure. The ship’s captain has just given us an updated ETA for his vessel’s arrival in port. No, not Monkey D. Luffy; the other captain of the Going Merry. This is your captain. The legendary Eiichiro Oda, author of the One Piece manga. Oda posted a status update on the planned live-action adaptation of his long-running manga series on Netflix’s social media in honor of Luffy’s birthday.

The brief statement thanked the team behind the series, adding that while it hasn’t always been simple, “each and every entity engaged is working in sync.” It also included illustrations of Luffy and the other crew members Sanji, Usopp, Nami, and Zoro. Fans of his work will be pleased to hear that he plans to remain involved in the show’s production: “I wish to be able to oversee things whilst I’m still active.”

When can supporters hope to board the ship alongside the cast? The series release was originally scheduled for 2023, but Oda wrote that Netflix “made a promise that we would not release it until I’m pleased.” Oda concludes his email by assuring viewers that the crew is currently wrapping up the series’ eight episodes and will “be setting sail very soon!”. Even though it’s Luffy’s special day, it appears that the birthday present was given to the audience.
