A brand new Pokemon series will soon be hitting Netflix’s streaming platform. This will be the first time the Pokemon franchise will be collaborating with the streaming giant. Both companies are coming together to bring a stop-motion show, Pokemon Concierge.

During the 2023 Pokemon Day Presents Livestream, a plethora of new information was revealed to the fans. Many new projects were announced, along with more for the Nintendo juggernaut franchise.

However, one particular announcement that got fans both surprised and excited was when Netflix confirmed a brand new partnership with Pokemon in the form of a brand new series dubbed Pokemon Concierge.

What makes this new project different from the usual movies and anime is that it is a stop-motion project. Vice President of Netflix content in Asia, Minyoung Kim, said in a press release, “Netflix is looking forward to delighting fans in Japan and around the world with Pokémon Concierge, an entirely new visual and storytelling experience featuring groundbreaking stop-motion animation set in the Pokémon world in close collaboration with The Pokémon Company.

“We’re also excited to reveal this new series on Pokémon Day and provide fans with even more things to look forward to on this special holiday celebrating the popular franchise.”

While much of the project is still under wraps, a brief teaser trailer was released with the confirmation of the series.

For the unversed, stop-motion is a style of animation where creators develop physical models of characters and then move them frame by frame to create each shot. It involves photographing and then physically manipulating the characters or the objects in the frame.

Since each frame is played in sequence, the technique creates the effect of an object moving. The most popular examples of such work and Aardman Animations, who have introduced the Wallace and Gromit franchise and several other stop-motion projects.

Pluto manga coming to Netflix

Netflix has confirmed its plans to release the animated series of Naoki Urasaw’s Pluto manga in 2023. The streaming giant has also confirmed the project’s lead Japanese voice cast and studio.

GENCO will still be at the helm in collaboration with Tezuka Productions with animation production by M2. Netflix provided a statement where Urasawa said, “In a quote provided by Netflix, Urasawa said, “I applaud the courage of everyone that has taken on the challenge of making an anime based on PLUTO. I am excited about the birth of this new series to win over people’s hearts. I hope that now more than ever, Osamu Tezuka’s message reaches the world.”

Co-author Takashi Nagasaki added, “PLUTO inherits the philosophy of Tezuka and does not merely convey a message of anti-war, but reminds us that there is suffering on both sides… but still, the only remaining answer is peace.” Supervisor Macoto Tezka, a son of the late Osamu Tezuka, said.
