With them came some extremely important and satisfying revelations and reveals that fans had speculated about and desired long before the release of One Piece Chapter 1044. Luffy Devil Fruit Revealed, Gear Fifth Debuts In One Piece Chapter 1044 Spoilers
The spoilers for One Piece Chapter 1044 revealed some incredible details about Luffy’s Devil Fruit, confirming a long-held fan theory. This chapter also sees the debut of Luffy’s Gear Fifth, which also serves as his Awakening form.
Initial spoilers
As previously stated, the first spoilers for One Piece Chapter 1044 were released and translated this morning. The spoilers have been compiled into a single, digestible graphic for fans to reference, thanks to Twitter user @Orojapan1.
One Piece Chapter 1044 begins with some of Luffy’s allies detecting his presence and declaring that he is not dead. These allies are Sanji, Law, Hyougouro, Kid, and Marco. The scene quickly shifts to Pangaea Castle in Mariejois, where the Gorosei are carrying on their conversation from earlier chapters.
They reveal that the World Government has repeatedly attempted to obtain the Gum-Gum Fruit, but it has always “run away from them.” This would imply that the Fruit has its own mind, which another member of the Gorosei confirms because Zoan Fruits do have their own minds.
The fact that Luffy’s Gum-Gum Fruit is a Zoan fruit, and a Mythical Zoan Fruit at that, is implied here. The Human-Human Fruit, Mythological Model: Nika is its full name. The use of the word “Nika” here most likely refers to the Sun God, confirming previous theories about it being a deity-based Devil Fruit.
As previously speculated, the chapter then quickly shifts perspective to show Hiyori and Orochi. Hiyori removes her mask, and (as yet unspecified) Orochi will most likely recognise her as Oden’s daughter, rather than Komurasaki.
The action then shifts to Luffy in One Piece Chapter 1044. He appears to reveal that his Fruit has Awakened and that he now feels it is fully his. He also reveals that this Awakened form is his Gear Fifth, and that it represents the pinnacle of his power.
Although it is unclear when this occurs, additional spoilers state that Luffy can jump “very high” and that his appearance resembles the Nika silhouette. The additional spoilers also state that his body is still “flexible as rubber,” indicating that it retains qualities of its original forms.
After this point, it appears that Luffy vs. Kaido resumes, with the former reaching into the Skull Dome Castle and grabbing and dragging the latter back up to the Rooftop.

Luffy then appears to attack Kaido in a “savage manner,” most likely debuting a new attack or technique in the process. In an extremely exciting reveal, the former turns the ground into rubber in order to return his opponent’s Blast Breath right back to him.
