Challenges Faced by Manga Creators

The stressful conditions of the manga industry in Japan have had a negative impact on numerous creators, causing them to suffer from debilitating health conditions and take frequent breaks. For instance, Hunter x Hunter creator Yoshihiro Togashi has had to take multiple breaks due to his deteriorating health. Despite attempting to make a comeback in October 2022 when Hunter x Hunter resumed serialization, the manga entered another indefinite hiatus after two months. Similarly, Kōhei Horikoshi, the creator of My Hero Academia, has taken three breaks since the beginning of 2023 due to his health. Yusuke Murata, the artist of One-Punch Man, has urged Horikoshi to take care of himself.

The temporary hiatus of Jujutsu Kaisen is not uncommon in the manga industry, where creators face immense pressure and stress to meet deadlines and maintain a consistent release schedule. While fans may be disappointed at the delay, it is essential for the health and well-being of the creators to take breaks when necessary. We look forward to the return of Jujutsu Kaisen on May 14 and wish Gege Akutami good health and a speedy recovery.

In recent years, there have been growing calls for better working conditions and support for manga creators. The industry has taken steps to address these concerns, such as implementing health check-ups and providing mental health support. However, more needs to be done to ensure that creators are not overworked and underpaid.
