Manabu informed Mashiba that Ippo was going to give him some guidance but that the coach didn’t think words would be adequate to get the point across.

He dispatched Manabu to keep Ippo from doing something rash. Ippo’s anxiety was so bad that he locked himself out of the gym and couldn’t even unlock the door.

He considered going in, but lacked the self-assurance to do so. Manabu assured him that everything would be alright and that he was only there to offer friendly counsel by pointing out that this was not Dojo Yubari.

Ippo told Manabu that he is hesitant because Mashiba often distorts his words and he considers him terrifying. Ippo did not want Mashiba to think poorly of him or see any sign of arrogance on his part.

By the time they finished talking, Mashiba had arrived at the door. Ippo was frightened, and he hoped that Mashiba had not overheard them. Mashiba reassured him he could do whatever he wanted and that he wouldn’t misinterpret his words.

They stepped inside, and Manabu briefed Mashiba on the situation. Manabu informed them that Ippo had requested a fight with Mashiba. Since Mashiba had already retired, he was not only not a southpaw but also from a different weight class, so naturally everyone assumed they were joking.

They were getting ready for a match for the world title, and Ippo and Manabu were the last thing they needed. Ippo was interested in giving it a shot after hearing that Coach Kamogawa had given his blessing from Manabu.
