Previously in Episode 8

Frieren and Draht’s initial showdown reveals the dramatic power and personality divide between them. Frieren maintains her composure despite Draht’s attempt on her life, speaking in an even tone that betrays her indifference and contempt.

Atsumi Tanezaki, who voices Frieren, does a fantastic job of conveying the icy distance of Frieren’s character. The dim lighting contributes to the chilly, gloomy atmosphere as Frieren treats her would-be killer as casually as she would a bug.

Frieren shows no real reaction to Draht’s death, other than to express regret that he killed the guard and then vanish.

Since she has no alibi to present to the police, she decides to go away rather than waste time trying to clear her name. She displays how little Draht and his schemes affect her by reacting pragmatically when they pit her against the same people she is trying to defend.

We then cut to Fern and Stark hatching a strategy to rescue Frieren and foil the demon’s schemes. While they both see the importance of recruiting her help, Stark remains wary in the wake of their unpleasant run-in with Lügner. His fright at the thought of their potential power is telling.

Instead of trying to make a joke out of Stark’s reluctance, the show uses it to emphasize the seriousness of facing such an adversary. Stark was terrified of Lügner, despite his own dragon-slaying achievements.

But the demons know that Frieren will kill Draht. After discovering Frieren’s escape and the guard’s murder, Graf Granat storms in with armed guards before they can respond. Granat publicly questions Frieren’s guilt and demands information regarding Draht’s location from the envoys, threatening to use force if necessary.
