League of Legends esports have a huge fan base and they expected the Korean Worlds 2022 Finals, to end 3-1 in favour of T1, but against all expectations, DRX came away with a thrilling and brilliant best-of-all-time performance and Won the match by scoring 3-2 in 5 series. The 4th-place LCK misfits started their journey at the play-in (where they exchanged their money into the wrong currency), adding another shocking surprise to their winning streak. After qualifying for the knockout stage, in the quarterfinals, they beat 2021 World Champion Edward Gaming by 3-2, and in the semi-finals, he defeated LCK Summer champions, Gen.G, by 3-1.

In the anime arc facing T1 in the finale, former Mapo High School classmates Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok and Kim “Deft” Hyukkyu are on opposite sides of the rift. They debuted at the same time in 2013, and almost a decade later Faker has won three championship titles to his name, but others had zero. Today, Deft finally fulfilled his lifelong dream and won his first-ever World Championship with DRX.

DRX are the champions of Worlds 2022! They beat T1 by 3-2 in intense matches and went the destiny

T1 dominated the first game, with Faker taking the lead with signature champion Azir. Top laner Choi “Zeus” Woo-je also had a good time with Comfort Champion Yone, while Lee “Gumayusi” Min-hyeong followed Varus. Those three champions of his were the key to him overtaking JD Gaming in the semi-finals a week ago. Undeterred, DRX drafted a second Heimerdinger backup for Cho “BeryL” Geon-hee and continued to strengthen Sylas in Game 2 with mid-laner Kim “Zeka” Geon-woo. The main difference is that they are now on the blue side and can pick Varus first. T1 adjusted its range on Bot with help from Ashe and Lux.

Both teams remained competitive, with T1 securing the Ocean Dragon Soul. At 45 minutes, they started from Baron, but DRX was as smart as they approached the 4v4, with Hwang “Kingen” Seong-hoon’s Camille coming in from above and Hong “Pyosik” Chang-hyeon. Viego was sandwiched from the other side. Deft’s Varus, on the other hand, found himself in the jungle across the river, completely unaffected during combat and able to deal maximum damage. They beat four and ran straight down the middle to complete their winning streak.

T1’s win of 3 Games would go down in history, but not for the expected reasons. DRX took control of the game and led the kills, but in the 24th minute he added Smite and Kalista to his team and he was making Baron when his Mun “Oner” Hyeon-jun in the jungle came out of nowhere. In no time I jumped into the pit and beat it. The buff allowed T1 to pick up the pace and give Gold an advantage. Unfortunately, just six minutes after DRX signed his second Baron, Pyosik hit early and again lacked coordination with his Deft. In his final second, he stole Lee “Gumayusi” Min-hyeong’s piercing arrow twice.

At last in the post-game broadcast interview, 26-year-old Deft reflected on what it means to him to finally call himself a world champion.

“Ever since my debut, every single night I’ve been dreaming about myself winning the world championship. It was only dream, but now, I’ve made it. I’m so happy right now,” he said. “One thing I wanted to say was ‘I’m the best player in the world, but today I realized that being the best player doesn’t matter. It’s about our team being the best in the world”. “My best talent is League of Legends. If I cannot be the best playing LoL, I told myself I won’t find any success in life. That’s why I didn’t want to give up,” Deft added.
