The Triumph of Chainsaw Man

Even with some of the best pieces in the business, Chainsaw Man, an engrossing masterwork, had difficult competition. Wataru Nadatani’s Cat + Gamer (Dark Horse), Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Goodbye, Eri (Viz Media), Hayao Miyazaki’s Shuna’s Journey (First Second), and Tatsuya Endō’s SPY x FAMILY (Viz Media) were among its competitors.” Chainsaw Man added another prize to its impressive collection, though, when it emerged as the clear winner.

A Rising Star: Drops of God

The new live-action television series Drops of God on Apple TV+, which is co-produced worldwide and features several languages, was also highlighted by the Harvey Awards. The manga series The Drops of God (Kami no Shizuku), written by Tadashi Agi and Shū Okimoto, is adapted for television. Although it was nominated for Best Adaptation from Comic Book/Graphic Novel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse took home the coveted prize in the end.

The Reign Continues

Chainsaw Man and SPY x FAMILY have been in the spotlight at the Harvey Awards for three years running thanks to this year’s triumph. Chainsaw Man established an unparalleled standard of excellence in the manga sector by winning the Best Manga category two years in a row.

A Remarkable Journey

2018 saw the debut of the Harvey Awards’ Best Manga category, with Kabi Nagata’s My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness manga taking home the title. Following that, My Hero Academia by Kōhei Horikoshi and Witch Hat Atelier by Kamome Shirahama won the prize in 2019 and 2020, respectively.

Manga and other comics were nominated in the previous year’s “Best American Edition of Foreign Material” category. Notably, Attack on Titan by Hajime Isayama won this category last year in 2014. Even though they were nominated in 2016, One-Punch Man and Showa: A History of Japan (1953-1989) were not the winners. It is noteworthy that the category for “Best American Edition of Foreign Material” has been eliminated from the awards.

The hat-trick victory of Chainsaw Man solidifies its position as a genuine industry icon, and the Harvey Awards remain a monument to the extraordinary talent and inventiveness in the comics and sequential art fields. There’s little doubt that this enthralling manga’s legacy will only deepen with time as readers excitedly anticipate the release of the next chapter.
