Modern Warfare 2 added Party Mode Gun Game as an option in the weekly playlist update this weekend, and players immediately jumped in for some classic fun. But they were met with an interesting and for many infuriating revelation. In gun games, the mini-map shows players who shoot their guns as red dots on the mini-map. This may sound like a minor point, but it has been a point of contention in one of the more recent CoD titles where this feature was completely missing. That was the Modern Warfare of 2019.

“The design reason for this is that we don’t want to punish players for firing their weapons. We also want players to actively search for the origin of a gunshot versus traveling directly to where the dot is on the minimap. In previous Call of Duty games, firing an unrestricted weapon would cause you to appear as a red dot on the enemy’s minimap. However, this changed with 2019’s Modern Warfare, and instead, it only revealed your location as a red dot on a compass, which is far less accurate. In turn, this changed the pace of the match, requiring players to spend time finding opponents instead of running straight to their usual location.

Soon after jumping into the Modern Warfare 2 beta, players noticed changes with the mini-map. Historically in Call of Duty titles, firing unrestricted weapons displayed a glowing red dot on the mini-map, letting enemies know your position. But in Modern Warfare 2, enemy player points only appear on the mini-map when the UAV is activated.

Changes to the Modern Warfare 2 mini-map have been a point of contention in the community. So much so, Infinity Ward issued a public response. In this they say, So basically, Infinity Ward wants players to use their auditory senses to track down enemies and not just rely on the mini-map. Based on this statement from Infinity Ward, it sounds like they plan to stick to their guns and stick to the Modern Warfare 2 mini-map changes. However, they do mention that they will continue to listen to feedback on the subject.
