As the release of CS2 approaches, the prices of CS: GO skins skyrocket

Counter-Strike 2 would not only allow all CS: GO players to port over their valuable skin inventories, but it would also include visual updates to improve the colors and textures of said skins. The market for skins has exploded since that announcement.

Since the announcement of Counter-Strike 2, which is set to release this summer, the Counter-Strike community has gone crazy. As over a million players rushed to see if they’d won exclusive access to CS2’s closed beta, Valve quietly dropped another massive bombshell update about their next title.

Counter-Strike 2 would not only allow all CS: GO players to port over their valuable skin inventories, but it would also include visual updates to improve the colors and textures of said skins. As the release of CS2 approaches, the prices of CS: GO skins skyrocket:

Skins on the Steam Marketplace have seen a wave of inflation, with markups ranging from 50 to even 75 percent. The Factory New Bayonet Marble Fade is one of the most incredible examples. The skin sold for around $850 in late March. It is now nearly $1500 on the Steam Marketplace in late April. That’s a 76 percent increase for skin that was already valuable and expensive.

However, the Marble Fade pattern has not received a significant visual update in the CS2 beta. What about skins that have been shown to glow in the new Counter-Strike installment? Consider the MP9 Hot Rod, which has also seen a significant price increase. A Factory New Hot Rod was selling for around $35 a month ago using the same parameters as the Marble Fade. With all of the hype surrounding the new CS, the cheapest one on the market now sells for a whopping $70. That is more than double what it previously sold for, demonstrating the power that the CS2 hype is bringing to the skins market.

That’s not even the most egregious markup so far. The Factory New Glock-18 Twilight Galaxy was met with criticism from the community for its lack of pop for a skin based on clusters of stars. Those complaints have been addressed in CS2, with the skin receiving arguably the best visual update of all time, and the market for the skin reflecting it. This skin sold for around $75 about a month ago. The cheapest one on the market now costs $315 as of April 22. That’s a 420 percent markup, more than four times the price just thirty days ago.

Since the release of CS2, the price of the ever-popular CS: GO cases has increased dramatically as well, illustrating the chaotic inflation that is not just affecting the skins themselves. In less than a month, the prices of the Chroma and Chroma 2 cases have nearly doubled from $1.75 to $3.50, and older, more expensive cases like the Huntsman case have increased from $7.65 to almost eleven dollars. Due to the hype, some players chose to try their luck at snatching the inflated skins out of the case rather than paying the price for them.

In addition, players looking to make a quick buck have started opening a lot of extra cases in the hopes of snagging rare items to profit from the market’s extreme inflation. This March was so busy with cases that players opened 39.5 million more than their previous monthly record. The soft launch for Counter-Strike 2 is still scheduled for the summer of 2023. Valve is actively working to refine the game and get it ready for launch in the upcoming months as more players gain access to the closed beta. After about a month of anticipation, it appears that skin prices will only go up, possibly up to the game’s launch.
