Toni Kroos had ‘verbally agreed’ with David Moyes to join Manchester United in 2014

Toni Kroos was on the verge of joining Manchester United in the past, which is a well-known story among football fanatics. But how close was he to joining the Red Devils? Many people were unaware of this information until the player himself revealed it in an interview recently. Kroos, who was with Bayern Munich at that time, informed that not only was United interested in him but he had “verbally agreed” with former manager David Moyes for a move to Old Trafford. However, the deal fell through after Moyes was sacked as a result of United’s poor run of form in the 2013-14 season. Subsequently, the 32-year-old midfielder moved to Spain to join the mighty Real Madrid, where he has gone on to win numerous titles.

Toni Kroos reveals how close he was to joining Manchester United

The German midfielder has won four Champions League titles among various domestic honours. Even at the international level, he went on to win the biggest of honours – the 2014 World Cup. Kroos, who has made over 350 appearances for Real Madrid, has revealed how close he was to joining Manchester United. “I knew beforehand that United wanted me,” Kroos said as per the Daily Mail. “And Moyes absolutely underlined that. It was a really nice afternoon with very pleasant people. We talked a lot about United’s football plan, which convinced me.”

“We also got to know each other as people. We knew quite a bit about the Moyes family afterwards. We talked about how we lived and how we all imagined life as a family. In the end, we broke up to do it. So we agreed verbally. The next step should be to look at everything on the spot in Manchester. The move would not have been that complicated – after all, we only had one child at the time, seven months old. It would all have worked.”

Kroos, however, does not want to imagine how his career would have turned out had he moved to Old Trafford. “I’m not someone who thinks about hypotheticals,” Kroos added. “Yes, it was close. I almost went to Manchester United. But that’s not how things turned out. I don’t have these ‘what if’ thoughts. Because there are no real answers to them. The only thing I can say with certainty is that I probably wouldn’t have won the Champions League three times with Manchester United.”

Is a move to Old Trafford possible in the future?

At 32 years, Toni Kroos still continues to play at the top of his game and is still Real Madrid’s main midfield orchestrator. However, Kroos played down the chance of moving to Manchester United in the future. “United is too big a club to be there for a year or two,” he added. “This is not a club where you go to finish your career. You have to be there for three or four years and both the player and club must have a clear idea.”
