Southampton defeated Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 in the Premier League fixture in London on Wednesday. Spurs took the lead in the 18th minute, courtesy of an own goal by Jan Bednarek before Southampton equalized through Armando Broja. The visitors appeared to be heading into defeat after Son Heung-Min restored the lead in the 70th minute. But the Saints fought back as Mohamed Elyounoussi and Che Adams headed home from James Ward-Prowse’s cross to silence the home crowd.

Southampton were the first to threaten the goal as Adams’ attempt from Elyounoussi ‘s cross was brilliantly saved by Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris from close range. Few minutes later, at the other end, Christian Romero put the ball inside the net from Heung-Min’s free-kick but the linesman rightly raised the flag for offside.

Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster made a superb save to deny Reguillon from Harry Kane’s assist. Lucas Moura played a perfect through ball to release Pierre-Emile Hojberg on the right side and the Danish footballer’s low cross was turned into an own goal by Bednarek.

In response, Ward-Prowse tested Lloris from outside the box. The Saints continued to push men forward for the equaliser and got it in the 23rd minute. It was a calamitous goal for Spurs to concede, as Ben Davies lost his footing and Davison Sanchez failed to clear his lines, allowing Broja to score.

The visitors continued to carve Spurs open as Stuart Armstrong’s header from Romain Perraud’s cross was pushed away by Lloris. Broja dragged his effort wide from inside the box. Three minutes before the break, Perraud’s powerful long-range effort rattled the crossbar.

Adams’ winner

Spurs improved in the second period as Kane’s header from Reguilon’s cross went over the bar before Son put Spurs’ nose in front. Kane released Moura on the right and the Brazilian’s cross was nicely slotted home by Son. Southampton players protested as Broja suffered a head injury during Spurs’ build up, but the goal stood.

The Saints refused to lie down and they suddenly turned the game on its head. Elyounoussi headed home from Ward-Prowse’s cross to make the score 2-2 in the 79th minute. Then, two minutes later, once again Ward-Prowse delivered a perfect cross into the box for Adams to head in.

Spurs pushed for the leveller and thought they had it when Bergwijn turned home Christian Romero’s knockdown, but just as the players were waiting for the game to be resumed, VAR intervened to rule offside.
