Manchester United centre-back Raphael Varane reckons that the Premier League is the “best league” in the world. The French defender gives various reasons to back his statement. He believes that intensity is one of the many reasons that make it difficult to play in the league. Varane also believes it is never truly over till the final whistle is blown, as he reckons that “anything can happen” till the final ball is kicked. The Manchester United defender moved to the Premier League from Spanish giants Real Madrid last summer. He had to overcome a couple of injury lay-offs since joining the Reds but now seems to have acclimatised well to life in England.

The 28-year-old World Cup winner has maintained his consistency even when playing alongside different centre-back partners. He has played alongside Phil Jones, Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire. Varane has experience of playing in Spain with Real Madrid and in France with Lens.
During an interview with the latest edition of Inside United, Varane has opened up about playing in the English top-flight. “The intensity is very different,” he admitted. “The pace of the game is a really high level. It’s a great experience. I like the atmosphere around the stadiums. I like the mentality. It’s very intense but always in good spirit and very positive. This experience for me is great.”

The thing that is appreciated the most about the Premier League is the fact that the teams at the bottom half of the table can still upset the clubs sitting near the top on any even given day. Hence, it is not surprising that Varane believes that games are “very difficult” in the league.
“Yeah, the games are very difficult,” he stated. “You can’t be relaxed, you can be winning a game and you know if you have 10 minutes to play, anything can happen. I think it’s the best league in the world and the intensity is absolutely amazing. Every team has players with top quality.
“Tactically, it’s a very high level and there are a lot of players and coaches from everywhere. So it’s a mix about different cultures and different styles of players and of mentality. I think that is why the league is top because it’s the best from everywhere, you know [laughs].”
