Leeds United announced the removal of Marcelo Bielsa as head coach after a disappointing run of results, culminating with a 4-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspurs. It was the club’s fourth defeat in a row and during this time period, they have conceded 17 goals. That is over four goals per game. There are a number of fans who were in support of giving the Argentine at least until the end of the season but the club’s board did not share that mentality. As per reports, Leeds will make an announcement about their new manager on Monday with RB Salzburg boss Jesse Marsch emerging as the favorite to take over.

“Leeds United can today confirm the club have parted company with head coach Marcelo Bielsa,” a club statement read. The club’s chairman, Andrea Radrizzani said that the decision had to be made due to their ‘precarious’ place in the Premier League table.

“This has been the toughest decision I have had to make during my tenure at Leeds United, taking into account all the success Marcelo has had at the club,” Radrizzani said. “With Marcelo as our head coach, we had three incredible campaigns and the good times returned to Elland Road. He changed the culture of the club and brought a winning mentality to us all.”

“The moments created, particularly in the 2019/20 season and winning promotion to the Premier League, will of course live long in all our memories, myself and the fans included. However, I have to act in the best interest of the club and I believe a change is required now in order to secure our Premier League status,” the chairman concluded.

Is Bielsa a Leeds legend?

Despite his tenure ending in a less-than-ideal way, fans at Elland Road will remember Bielsa as one of the most significant figures the club has had in recent history. It is true that the 66-year-old Argentine brought a winning mentality to the side. It was this mentality that helped them reach England’s top flight in 2020 after a 16-year-long absence.

In his first season in the Premier League, Bielsa’s men played his patented high pressing type of football. It was exciting, it was enthralling, but most importantly, it was effective. The club finished in the top half of the table in their very first year back. With 59 points, Leeds found themselves in ninth position, an unbelievable feat for a newly-promoted side in the Premier League.
