Chelsea face a major challenge to keep up pace with the top two teams in the Premier League after one of their main players suffered an injury. Manager Thomas Tuchel revealed that Reece James is injured and could miss the league tie against Norwich City at Carrow Road on Thursday. The right-back who is often deployed as a wing-back for the Blues has been an instrumental figure for the club this season. However, the English international was sidelined for a lengthy spell with a hamstring injury. He returned to action recently and has continued to maintain his previous form. James was also impressive in the weekend win over Burnley at Turf Moor where he registered a goal and an assist in a convincing 4-0 win.

But the latest injury concern could be a big blow to Chelsea football club and its supporters. “Everybody was on the training pitch today except for Ben Chilwell and Reece James, who has some muscular problems after his three games,” Tuchel was quoted as saying by their club’s website.

“He has muscular problems in his other leg, not the previously injured leg, but he will still need some further assessment. “He felt it during the match and it didn’t get any better. Today there will be further examinations. It’s obvious what he can give to our team, so it is not good news at the moment.”

Thomas Tuchel on Ben Chilwell

A picture of Ben Chilwell out on the grass at Cobham caught the eye of many but Tuchel quickly put the speculation to bed, saying it will take a while for the left-back to return to action. “Chilly was back out on the grass training and I think the one minute he was out on the grass they took a photo of him!” Tuchel added.

“The weather made it possible he could do the exercise outside and it was good to see, but he still has a long way to go. They made him smell the grass and get a bit excited, but nothing close to football or team training. There isn’t any chance he will be back before the end of the season.”

Thomas Tuchel on Andreas Christensen

Tuchel then diverted his attention to Andreas Christensen, with the future of the defender still remaining uncertain. Christensen’s contract is set to expire this summer. “We hear the rumours with Andreas and it’s been like this for many months,” Tuchel said.

“He has not signed yet so we can’t communicate anything. We are not happy about it and personally and the club representatives think it’s best for him to stay here. We rely heavily on him. We have to consider the possibility that he may leave us. Will we like that? No. Will we live with it? Yes.

“If things happen, it’s normally the best thing not to take them personally. He is still our player and we will do what is best for us while he is a Chelsea player. He knows we appreciate him a lot and I think it’s a crucial point in his Chelsea career; he is in a perfect age and perfect moment with the system we play and the guys at his side. I think it’s the decisive moment to step up and be a huge player for Chelsea in the next years. If he decides otherwise, I will not take it personally.”
