In the 2023 Cricket World Cup match between India and New Zealand, Shubman Gill achieved a remarkable milestone in ODI cricket. During this game, Gill made history by becoming the youngest cricketer to score 2000 runs in ODI cricket, surpassing the legendary South African cricketer Hashim Amla. This impressive feat was accomplished in just 38 innings, which is two innings fewer than Amla and seven fewer than the Pakistani cricket legend Zaheer Abbas. The Top 5 list for the fastest 2000 ODI runs is completed by Kevin Pietersen, Babar Azam, and Rassie van der Dussen, all achieving this milestone in 45 innings.

In the highly anticipated World Cup clash between the two undefeated teams, New Ze­aland managed to reach a total of 273 all out against India. Daryl Mitchell played a key role by scoring a brilliant century, which guided New Zealand’s innings. Despite losing their openers early, Mitchell and Rachin Ravindra formed a partnership of 159 runs, setting a new record for the highest partnership between these two teams in a World Cup match, surpassing the previous best of 136 runs set by Sunil Gavaskar and Kris Srikkanth in 1987.

Fast bowler Mohammed Shami played a crucial role for India in the final 10 overs, taking five wickets for 54 runs in his first appearance at the tournament. Fellow pacemen Mohammed Siraj and Shami dismissed key New Zealand batsmen, putting the Kiwis at 19-2.

New Zealand’s innings concluded with Lockie Ferguson being run out on the last ball of the 50th over. Both India and New Zealand have won four games each in the round-robin tournament, but New Zealand currently leads the 10-team table due to a superior run-rate.
