It has been nearly three weeks since Bangladesh’s impressive victory over Afghanistan in their opening match in Dharamsala. However, since then, it has been a disappointing campaign for The Tigers, as they have suffered three consecutive losses. Currently, they find themselves in the lower half of the points table and are eager to return to winning ways in order to remain in contention for a top-four position.

Bangladesh is now set to face South Africa, a team brimming with confidence after winning three out of four matches. South Africa did experience an unexpected defeat against the Netherlands but rebounded strongly with a resounding 229-run victory over England. Following a poor batting performance against the Dutch, South Africa elevated their game, and England succumbed to their heaviest defeat in terms of runs in ODIs due to scoreboard pressure. South Africa is determined to maintain their winning momentum and secure a solid position in the top half of the standings.

Venue: Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai

Time: The match is scheduled to commence at 2 PM IST and Local Time on Tuesday, October 24.

Team Information:

South Africa: Temba Bavuma missed the game against England due to an illness, and there’s a 50-50 chance of his participation against Bangladesh. If he is fit, Reeza Hendricks, who delivered a well-compiled 85 against England in his first World Cup appearance, may need to make way for his captain.

Bangladesh: Shakib Al Hasan, who was sidelined for the match against India due to a quad injury, worked diligently in the nets on Sunday, October 22. If Shakib’s fitness assessment confirms his readiness for a full 100 overs, he is likely to return to the Bangladesh XI in Mumbai. Meanwhile, Taskin Ahmed’s availability remains in doubt due to a shoulder injury, and he may continue his recovery, having not been part of Bangladesh’s previous fixture against the host nation.

Bangladesh – 2 wins

Recent Form

“The batting group has to take up responsibility,” remarked Najmul Hossain Shanto, standing in as Bangladesh’s skipper, following his team’s third consecutive defeat in the ongoing tournament. Shanto’s assessment appears quite apt, as none of their batters has managed to score a century so far, with only Mushfiqur Rahim and Litton Das registering more than one fifty. Skipper Shakib Al Hasan’s highest score in three innings is 40, and the promotion of all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz to No. 4 hasn’t yielded significant results. The bowlers have also fallen short of expectations, excelling against Afghanistan but struggling to make crucial breakthroughs against defending champions England, New Zealand, and hosts India. Bangladesh aims to put up a stronger performance and apply early pressure on South Africa.

In contrast, for South Africa, Quinton de Kock leads their batting chart with 233 runs, having achieved a century on two occasions. Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram, and Heinrich Klaasen have all contributed with centuries. Their bowlers have been among the wickets, demonstrating a collective effort. “That loss against the Netherlands was a tough one, but we know we are playing good cricket. One loss doesn’t make us a bad team. We had some discussions and our team bounced back with training sessions. It was fantastic against England,” commented Klaasen during the post-match presentation of the South Africa vs. England game.
