His first-class debut came for Saurashtra in December 2005 and he made his Test debut in Bangalore in October 2010 as well. However, he was a part of the India A team which travelled to England in 2010 and he was also the leading scorer on the tour as well. He returned in the Test against New Zealand in August 2012, hitting a hundred.
He made his first double-century against England at Ahmedabad in November 2012 and scored another double-ton against Australia in March 2013 as well. In February 2017, during the one-off Test match against Bangladesh, he set a new record for the most runs by a batsman in an Indian first-class season with a whopping 1,605 runs. In November 2017, he smashed his twelfth double-century in first-class cricket, the most by any Indian batsman, breaking the earlier record of Vijay Merchant as well.

Cheteshwar Pujara was included in the squad for the two-match Test series against Australia in 2010 at home. His Test debut came in the second Test of the series which was on 9 October 2010 at Bangalore. In his first Test innings, Pujara managed only four runs before getting out to Mitchell Johnson on the third ball as well. In the second innings, Pujara hit 72 before being bowled. However, he also became the second-fastest player to score 1,000 test runs by an Indian player. He scored 5,000 runs in Tests and became the fifth fastest Indian to reach the feat in terms of innings batted (108) and became the eleventh Indian cricketer to reach 6000 Test Runs as well.
