Shannon Gabriel is a Trinidadian cricketer born 28 April 1988. He represents the West Indies in international competition. He is a right arm fast bowler. Gabriel played his first-class debut match for Trinidad & Tobago against the Leeward Islands in the season 2009-10 Regional Four Day Tournament on January 29, 2010. Gabriel’s maiden wicket came later when he opened the bowling alongside Richard Kelly. The match ended with Gabriel getting two wickets for 46 runs as Trinidad and Tobago won by 45 runs. Gabriel then played two more first-class matches that season, ending with four wickets at 39.75 runs at each match. After making his debut in 2010, he rapidly established himself as a major element of Trinidad and Tobago’s assault.

The West Indies Cricket Board formed the West Indies High Performance Facility in June 2010 to improve the level of the region’s young players. Gabriel was one of the facility’s first 15 players, aged 19 to 27. The facility fielded a squad in the regional 50-over tournament, the WICB Cup, in 2010/11. Gabriel on 15 October, played his List A debut match in the tournament, opening the bowling and getting two wickets for 30 runs against Guyana. He then played two more matches in the 2010/11 Cup without getting another wicket. Later he was signed for a red-ball contract for the 2018-19 season in October 2018 by Cricket West Indies (CWI).

In Gabriel’s test match debut against England in May 2012, he grabbed four wickets while getting 86 runs throughout the match. It was an excellent performance in terms of taking wickets and economy rate. Gabriel got his second Test five wicket haul in the fourth innings of the match against Pakistan on March 4, 2017. Gabriel got 5 wickets and gave 11 runs and was awarded as man of the match. In early 2019 England’s cricket squad toured the West Indies to play three Tests, five ODIs, and three T20Is. During the third Test in February 2019, however, Gabriel was overheard making an inappropriate (homophobic) comment to England’s captain, Joe Root. Due to which, the International Cricket Council (ICC) banned Gabriel for four One-Day International (ODI) matches.

Gabriel was selected in the West Indies team for the 2019 Cricket World Cup in April 2019. In September 2019 something unusual happened because, West Indies became the first team to bat with 12 players in an innings in a Test match. In that match Gabriel became the first no 12 batter to walk out in the middle. Gabriel played in his 50th Test match against New Zealand in December 2020. Gabriel has played a total of 85 International matches for West Indies including all the three formats of the game. He has played most of his career matches in Test cricket. He has played 58 Test matches and has taken 164 wickets in 102 innings with an economy rate of 3.41. In One day Internationals Gabriel has taken 33 wickets in 25 matches with an economy rate of 5.93. Gabriel has turned 34 and still has a lot of potential stored inside.
