Mohammad Nabi is a professional cricketer, who plays for Afghanistan cricket team Internationally. Nabi has represented the Afghanistan team in all the three formats of the game. He is one of the most experienced players of the team. Nabi was born on 1 January 1985 in the Logar region of Afghanistan. Nabi is a right handed batsman and a right arm spin bowler. He has played a very crucial role in bringing Afghanistan’s cricket to the level it is now. He was part of the Afghanistan team when they played their first ever One Day International (ODI) in 2009 and also when Afghanistan played their first Test match in 2018. He also was part of the Afghanistan’s team that played its first T20 Internationals against Ireland on 1 February 2010.

Nabi’s family originally belonged to Logar, but they had to leave Logar and moved to Peshawar, Pakistan due to the Soviet Afghan war. Nabi started playing cricket in Pakistan when he was only 10 years old. Nabi’s family moved back to their home country Afghanistan and Nabi began playing cricket there. In 2003, Nabi played his first professional match. Back then, the Afghanistan team didn’t have proper cricketing gear and infrastructure. After seeing Nabi’s performance at the tour match in Mumbai, he was selected by Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) in England. Nabi played his debut first class match for MCC in 2007 against Sri Lanka. He also played domestic cricket in Pakistan while representing Pakistan Customs.

Nabi was part of Afghanistan cricket team’s success when it rose from division five of the World Cricket League to One Day International (ODI). Afghanistan came into limelight when they won 2008 ICC World Cricket League Division Five. Afghanistan also won ICC world Cricket League Division Four after that. Nabi played outstandingly in all the tournaments. Afghanistan also won division three and was set to play the world cup qualifiers, but unfortunately they didn’t qualify for the 2011 world cup. However, Afghanistan achieved the ODI status. Afghanistan played their first ODI against Scotland for the fifth place in the qualifying tournament of world cup 2011 in India. Nabi was given man of the match award for his match winning knock of 58 runs. 

The Afghanistan Cricket Board named Nabi as the captain of the team in March 2013. Nabi led the Afghanistan team in ICC Intercontinental Cup in UAE. Afghanistan team played under Nabi’s captaincy in the 2014 ICC T20 World Cup and 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup. Nabi left the captaincy in April 2015. Nabi was part of the Test team that played their debut Test match against India in 2018. In a match against Pakistan in the 2019 ICC world cup, Nabi reached the milestone of 200 International wickets. He was Afghanistan’s highest wicket taker with 10 wickets in the tournament. In the year 2021, Nabi retired from Test cricket. On March 24, 2023, Afghanistan won their first ever match against Pakistan in any of the formats. Nabi was named man of the match for his all round performance.
