Ashwin Ravichandran, India’s ace off-spinner, became the sixth spinner in history to bring up 450 Test wickets when he removed Alex Carey on day one of the first Test against Australia in Nagpur on Thursday. During the day’s play, Ashwin had to wait his turn, but one brought two as he bowled a dangerous-looking Carey and Australia skipper Pat Cummins in short succession. First, he bowled Carey with a reverse sweep that caught the under edge and snuck onto the stumps. After that, Cummins edged one to Virat Kohli at slip. Ashwin became the second Indian bowler to reach the milestone with his 450th wicket. He is now only behind Kumble.

Earlier in the day, Australia won a critical toss and embarked on what appears to be an impossible task in today’s cricket: defeating India in a Test series in India. On a surface that is predicted to aid spin, there was no hesitation in batting first. India lacked their finest batsman in the past two years, Rishabh Pant, but they still looked menacing, particularly in their bowling. They have three distinct but deadly precise finger spinners in R Ashwin, the returning Ravindra Jadeja, and Axar Patel, indicating that India expects aid from the surface. Along with two debutants, wicketkeeper KS Bharat and maverick Suryakumar Yadav, these three contributed strength to the batting, establishing a solid lower middle order.
