Virat Kohli set to miss T20Is and ODIs against South Africa; Rohit Sharma's availability pending

Virat Kohli is poised to skip the upcoming T20I and ODI series against South Africa, with Rohit Sharma yet to confirm his participation in the white-ball matches. As the Indian cricket team transitions into a new phase post the Cricket World Cup 2023, a young squad led by Suryakumar Yadav is currently captaining the side in a 5-match T20I series against Australia. However, with the comprehensive tour of South Africa on the horizon, there is no official confirmation regarding the availability of senior players such as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

Virat Kohli has chosen to sit out the T20I and ODI series against South Africa starting on December 10, joining the team only for the Test series. Kohli’s absence from T20 internationals has been a subject of discussion since the T20 World Cup 2022, but his exclusion from the ODI series comes as a surprise. Additionally, Rohit Sharma is yet to declare his intention to participate in the ODI series against South Africa, and he is expected to skip the T20I series in the Rainbow Nation. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee, led by former India all-rounder Ajit Agarkar, is set to finalize the Indian team for all three formats in the upcoming days.

Both senior batters are likely to be part of the Test series, commencing on Boxing Day at Centurion. Currently, Virat Kohli is on holiday in London, while Rohit Sharma is reportedly in the United Kingdom, taking a break from the game following India’s heart-wrenching loss to Australia in the World Cup final. Although both Kohli and Rohit displayed exceptional form in the ODI World Cup, concluding as the top run-scorer and under what circumstances they plan to rejoin the white-ball team remain uncertain.
