Tim Bresnan, the man who denied Sachin Tendulkar a historic 100th century during the Oval Test against India in 2011, has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. Bresnan, who made his debut in 2009 against the West Indies, was part of the period when England was No.1 in Tests. In fact, for his first 13 consecutive Tests, Tim Bresnan never tasted defeat. Prior to denying Sachin Tendulkar his 100th century, Bresnan had played a vital role in England’s Ashes win in Australia. He took 4/50 in an inspired spell of reverse swing bowling in Melbourne as England won the Ashes on Australian soil after 24 years.

Bresnan played a total of 23 Tests and took 72 wickets. He also played 85 ODIs with 109 wickets. His best haul was 5/48 in the match against India in the 2011 ICC World Cup match in Bangalore. The match saw an epic as it was tied in dramatic circumstances. Bresnan was also part of the victorious 2010 ICC World T20 triumph.

However, after such a great start, Bresnan underwent elbow surgery and was never the same again. He subsequently faded out of the team after the 2013/14 Ashes whitewash. Bresnan played his last international match for England in 2015.

Tim Bresnan looks back on decent career

At his peak, Tim Bresnan was one of the best all-rounders in the England team in their ascent to the No.1 position. He had some great contributions with the bat and ball. In his 20-year career for Yorkshire and Warwickshire, Bresnan took 575 wickets and scored 7128 runs. Bresnan cited continued injuries to his body as the reason why he had to leave the game of cricket.

“This has been an incredibly tough decision, but after returning to winter training I feel that this is the right time. I have continued to work hard throughout the off-season to prepare for my 21st professional year. But deep down I feel I can’t reach the high standards that I set myself and my teammates. The hunger and enthusiasm that I have for the game I love will never leave me. But whilst my head is willing to tackle the 2022 season, my body is not,” Bresnan said in a statement. Bresnan helped Yorkshire to eight County Championships from 2001 to 2019. When he left Yorkshire for Warwickshire, it marked the end of a great association. However, towards the end of his career, he was implicated in the bullying of Azeem Rafiq to which he apologized.
