Since 2013, Team India and knockout stage exits have become a familiar story, and the trophy pursuit has continued despite captain and personnel changes over the last nine years. India were defeated by England by a ten-wicket margin in the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final at the Adelaide Oval on November 10 to conclude their run at the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. Looking back at the past tournaments after the 2013 Champions Trophy victory led by MS Dhoni, India’s performance has not been stellar. Despite cruising throughout the tournament, India was defeated by Sri Lanka in the 2014 T20 World Cup final at the Sher E Bangla Stadium. India were undefeated in the tournament till the final.

The next year, at the ODI World Cup 2015 in Australia, India failed to get past the hosts in the semi-finals, and thus were eliminated from the tournament. The 2016 T20 World Cup in India was the same story again, with Virat Kohli’s blinder of a performance taking the side to 192 in the final, but it was not enough against a star-studded West Indies side that went on to win the tournament. The 2017 Champions Trophy was poised to be an India-Pakistan final, but a masterpiece from Fakhar Zaman utterly stunned the Indians.

It all came down to the inaugural ICC World Test Championship final versus New Zealand in 2021. However, after two years of hard work in the lengthier format, India fell short when it mattered most, losing to New Zealand in Southampton on the 6th day of the Final. The 2020 T20 World Cup was delayed for 2021 in the UAE, and India did not go past the group stage after losing to Pakistan and New Zealand in the first two games. India has crumbled under pressure and the fear of failure has seen them lose these important encounters. No other top side has played as many knockout games as India.
