Aaron Finch, Australia’s T20I captain, has stated that he will not retire following the defending champions’ early exit from the 2022 T20 World Cup. Finch, who retired from one-day internationals in September, scored 107 runs in three games, including a fifty against Ireland, and missed Australia’s last Super 12 encounter against Afghanistan due to a hamstring injury. The hosts lost their first match by 89 runs to New Zealand, which hurt their Net Run Rate, and then suffered a further setback when their match against England was rained out. They won against Sri Lanka, Ireland, and Afghanistan, but their NRR remained negative.

“No, I’m not going to retire. Not just yet. I’ll play Big Bash and see where we sit after that, but I’m still enjoying playing cricket, playing T20,” Finch told Australian media outlet Seven on Sunday. “There’s not another international T20 until August, so there’s quite a long break. Still, plenty of time to be able to weigh all that up. It’s been a pretty good ride regardless of what happens,” the 35-year-old said. Although Finch might wait for the BBL to find out where his career has headed he has not been in the best of touches in T20Is for at least 2 years.

Dwindling numbers for Finch

Finch’s overall career record is brilliant in T20Is as these numbers suggest. Finch strikes at only 119.9 in T20Is in 2022.

But his numbers in the last two years have been way below the standards he has set for himself.

This indicates that Finch has now been out of form for some time or at least not at his best. When he retired from ODIs he had mentioned that his T20 record was good but looking at these numbers it won’t be a bad idea if Finch considers retirement from T20Is as well.
