IPL 2021 is already proving to be a nightmare for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. They have lost their first three games to Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians by narrow margins. This is the first time in their history that they have lost their first three games on the trot. A batting line-up that is lacking experience and injuries to key players are hurting Sunrisers Hyderabad.

However, the performance of the Sunrisers Hyderabad is perhaps the fact that they are playing in their bogey ground of the MA Chidambaram stadium in Chennai. Ever since IPL 2013, when they first came to the tournament, Sunrisers Hyderabad have never won at the venue. They have played five matches at the venue in IPL 2013, IPL 2019 and three matches in IPL 2021. They have lost all five games, suggesting their struggles at the venue.

Horror from 2013

In the first match at the venue, Sunrisers Hyderabad had made 159/6. Chennai Super Kings needed 15 runs in the final over but MS Dhoni was on strike. Sunrisers Hyderabad decided to give the over to Ashish Reddy. However, Dhoni, at the height of his finishing powers at that time, blasted two sixes and won with two balls to spare.

In IPL 2019, Sunrisers Hyderabad were boosted by a knock of 83 from Manish Pandey and 57 from David Warner. Defending 176, Shane Watson blasted 96 and Kedar Jadhav hit a six as Chennai Super Kings won by five wickets with one ball to spare.

In IPL 2021, they have squandered away advantages due to batting collapses. Against Kolkata Knight Riders, they were on course but a middle order collapse saw them lose by 10 runs. The same situation played out against Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians. Speaking after the end of the match, skipper David Warner expressed disappointment by saying, “The guys need to play smart cricket in the middle, the bowlers have been fantastic and this wicket was slower than the previous wickets that we have played. You gotta learn from mistakes and it’s our responsibility at the top to bat deep.”

However, with some more games at Chepauk, Sunrisers Hyderabad’s nightmare might be prolonged.
